I recently wrote a post about joining writers groups and how they can be immensely helpful for finding resources, and for both learning and networking opportunities.

Because networking and having a support system is so important to independent authors, I wanted to tell you about another super useful and helpful group you may want to consider joining—the IBPA. You may ask, is joining the IBPA worth it though? I say, it absolutely is!

What is the IBPA and What Do They Do?

The Independent Book Publishers Association or IBPA, started in 1983, to fill a need. It was formed BY independent publishers FOR independent publishers when they realized they couldn’t afford to attend the American Booksellers Association’s annual conference and instead pooled their resources to send a representative. This representative, Jan Nathan, became the founder of what would eventually become the IBPA.

It was with this spirit that they began, and though there have been different iterations over the years, that spirit has remained the same. They still offer advocacy, opportunities and support to independent publishers and authors today. That’s why I believe joining the IBPA is worth it if you’re an indie author.

I’ve been speaking at their annual conference, Publishing University, for close to twenty years now and I regularly teach my personal branding webinars through the IBPA. I can tell you I have met some of the best people through them, whether they are running the show or attending it. Plus, the IBPA offers one of my favorite indie book awards, The Ben Franklins. And guess what? IBPA members get a massive discount on the entry fee to this prestigious award.

Oh, and you may have noticed(yes, it’s right there in the featured image) I’m teaching another upcoming six week webinar starting October 6th. I’m looking forward to it, as always!

Why Joining the IBPA is Worth it: What It Can Do for You

Because of the numerous resources and connections, education and advocacy available through the IBPA they can make a big difference in your success as an indie author in many ways. And joining the IBPA means discounts on their courses, conferences and marketing opportunities.

Joining the IBPA is worth it for these benefits alone. Being a member means you have access to the publishing industry on a much larger level. They offer free webinars, tips and advice and paid programs and marketing opportunities are offered at a steep discount. There are member discussion forums and newsletters full of valuable information you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

The IBPA  offers:

  • Exclusive and valuable advice and tips
  • Trade shows and conferences
  • Education and networking
  • Opportunities to sell your book to retailers and libraries
  • A sense of community and needed support

The IBPA Has Membership Levels!

Of course, every indie author has a marketing budget, as they well should. I understand you want to spend that budget wisely. But the bang for your buck you get from your IBPA membership and the time and energy it can ultimately save you means that  joining the IBPA is worth it when it comes to cost too.

One of the best things about an IBPA membership is that the cost is relatively low, especially for what is offered. But they do have different membership levels that offer you different perks based on your needs and goals.

You can find out more about those and see which one works for you here.

Basically, the yearly cost comes down to less per month than a streaming service subscription. And remember, you save money on your marketing through them by getting steep discounts on all they have to offer.

No, this isn’t sponsored content. I’m writing this because I truly believe in the IBPA and what they do and what they can do for indie authors. My past clients can tell you that I often recommend joining the IBPA to them. It’s that great!

In conclusion, joining the IBPA is worth it for so many reasons! Whether you’re an aspiring writer, have an indie book under your belt and need some help, or even if you want to be a publisher yourself, the IBPA offers invaluable support, networking and marketing opportunities that will help you find the level of success you dream of.

I’d love to hear if you join or not in the comments, and I’d love to see you out there in the wild with our fellow IBPA members!
